McIlroy outshines Woods and co
NORTHERN IRELAND’S Rory McIroy put the world’s top three golfers in the shade in the first round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods were grouped together, but it was the 21-year-old McIlroy who put them in shade with a superb 65 to lead by two shots from South Africa’s Thomas Aiken and Spain’s Sergio Garcia.
Woods rescued what he termed a “scratchy” 71 with a stunning closing eagle, while Westwood and Kaymer both carded 69s.
“I’d like to think I’m a better player than two years ago. I’m definitely more experienced and a more rounded and complete player,” said McIlroy, who holed eight birdies.
