Last-gasp Sarries dispatch holders Exeter to claim LV=Cup silverware
SARACENS match-winner Ben Spencer insists the club’s underpinning unity came to the fore as his side secured the LV=Cup with a last-gasp 23-20 victory over defending champions Exeter at Franklin’s Gardens yesterday.
Scrum-half Spencer, who received his first career yellow card shortly before the break, slotted over a last-minute penalty after two tries from full-back Max Bodilly saw Exeter fight back and draw level, having trailed 20-6 with 20 minutes remaining.
Saracens surged into a commanding lead courtesy of two tries from winger David Strettle and one from flanker Nick de Jager, as the Allianz Park side were able to call upon the services of England duo Alex Goode and George Kruis.
“We’re a very, very tight knit group,” said Spencer.
“During those last 10 minutes, we were fighting for everything. A few decisions didn’t go our way. In those last few minutes, to put pressure on Exeter like that from the line-out and then to get that penalty at the end was just brilliant.”
