Humiliated Wigan offer fans a refund
EMBARRASSED Wigan players have offered refunds to supporters who travelled to their 9-1 drubbing at Tottenham.
Latics fans who made the trip witnessed their side suffer the second heaviest defeat in Premier League history, with Spurs striker Jermain Defoe alone scoring five goals.
And that yesterday prompted the crestfallen squad’s pledge to reimburse the cost of tickets, with captain Mario Melchiot insisting they owe it to the Wigan faithful.
“We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday, and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty,” said Melchiot.
“There is not a lot else to say, just that as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed, we feel it was below our standards and this is something we feel we owe to the fans.”
The thrashing was a heavy blow for Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, who is still finding his feet in his first season in charge at the DW?Stadium, but chairman Dave Whelan insists the Spaniard’s job is safe.
“He is Wigan’s manager and I have complete faith in him and I know the supporters have,” said Whelan.
“I am absolutely 100 per cent behind Roberto, he’s a great manager and he will pull this team around.”
