England V Peru, Wembley, 8pm tonight
England have hardly set the world alight in their three most recent friendlies – losing to Chile and Germany at Wembley and scoring their only goal in a 1-0 win over Denmark.
But there’s quiet optimism in the camp at the moment after Roy Hodgson threw his renowned caution to the wind and selected a youthful squad for the World Cup next month.
Tonight’s game at Wembley against Peru provides a suitable opportunity for those young guns to prove that their manager’s faith wasn’t misplaced. Anything other than an easy win versus the South American country ranked 42nd in the world will be disappointing.
England/Peru is trading at 1.6-1.8 with Sporting Index and is worth a buy. International friendlies can be a graveyard for punters, but if the likes of Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge can’t hit a few past a side that took just one point from eight away games in World Cup qualifying then there’s little point England even boarding the plane to Brazil.
Peru also scored just 17 goals in 16 matches as they finished seventh of nine in failing to qualify for the World Cup, so the more daring punters among you might be keen to buy the time of their first goal at 72.
