CFTC: We may never know the cause of the flash crash
US regulators may never know what caused the market to plunge nearly 700 points on 6 May despite an exhaustive probe by securities and futures officials, according to two commissioners at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
“I think that it’s possible that we may never know what happened on that day”, said CFTC Commissioner Jill Sommers following a meeting with the Securities and Exchange Commission to discuss what triggered the market crash.
CFTC Commissioner Michael Dunn also said that “it’s going to be difficult for us to understand totally what happened.”
He added that while investigators might understand more of the dynamics surrounding what took place, “the real question is, are we going to be able to institute regulations that ensure we don’t have this type of meltdown or that we have steps to keep it from happening.”
