Britain’s first marine plans set to boost development
THE firs–t two marine areas to be covered by a new planning system mirroring that used to control development on land in England was launched yesterday with a remit to promote the sustainable development of seas.
Waters off the coast between Flamborough Head in East Riding of Yorkshire to Felixstowe in Suffolk will be labelled marine plan areas that are open to development from next April.
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) quango is the first in the world to develop an integrated planning system for the marine area and is expected to give a significant boost to local communities and the national economy.
The MMO is expected to work with local councils, coastal forums and communities to determine and agree how all stakeholders can use the sea.
