US economist Anna Schwartz has died at 96. She was co-author with Milton Friedman of A Monetary History of the United States, which blames the US central bank for the Great Depression. Ben Bernanke, the Fed’s current president said in 2002: “You're right, we did it. We're very sorry. But thanks to you, we won’t do it again.” Schwartz was iconoclastic to the end, opposing bailouts in 2008 and warning that Bernanke was keeping interest rates too low.
