Let's play a game – it’s called Miliband or Tory.

We’ll give you a quotation and you have to guess who said it: former Labour leader Ed Miliband or a member of the current Conservative government. Here goes....

“We believe everybody – not just the privileged few – has a right to take ownership of what matters in their lives”

Who said it?

“[We believe in] a country that works for you, not the privileged few.”

Who said it?

“Here is our plan: a modern industrial strategy for Britain’s businesses and Britain’s working families to succeed together.

Who was so industrious?

“[We will] deliver a comprehensive industrial strategy... furthering our world-class science base, delivering affordable, clean energy and tackling climate change”

Who said it?

"[We will] not stand by and watch British companies be asset stripped by foreign predators.”

Who said it?

“We must challenge irresponsible, predatory practices wherever we find them.”

Who said it?

“My vision of the country is about saying wherever they are – powerful vested interests – we need a prime minister who will stand up to them”.

Who said it?

“[It is our role] to take on the vested interests before us, to break up power when it is concentrated among the few, to lead on behalf of the people.”

Who said it?

Westminster commentators have noticed the stark similarity in rhetoric between Miliband and the new Tory regime, which may well be little more than an electoral ploy to steal centrist voters abandoned by Jeremy Corbyn.

Some market-liberals are worried, however, that the new government will be far more interventionist and managerial than its predecessor. Such an approach, especially post-referendum, would be a grave mistake. Let’s hope that May’s actions turn out to be stronger than her current choice of words.
