AS THE gale-force winds around EC3’s obnoxiously tall skyscrapers have started to resemble something of a sadistic financial round of “Gladiator”, insurers at Gracechurch have started asking some important questions. Which City institution has the sturdiest branded umbrella? Which has the most stylish? More importantly, which is the most coveted?

According to the firm’s annual study, XL Catlin is a strong contender for the Square Mile’s most fashionable wet weather protection. XL Catlin enjoys the highest usage amongst the City’s brokers, claiming that 45 per cent of them own at least one of its umbrellas. The firm also placed first in popularity, with a quarter of respondents voting it the best way to keep the rain off. Brokers loved the brollies for their practicality, with one respondent adding that it “does not turn inside out in strong wind.” Perfect for nipping past the Walkie Talkie.

Sadly, it was a case of style over substance with many, as the most coveted model was actually from Ascot. “You cannot miss the colours.”
