Romney and Obama battle over tax and restrictions on abortion
THE UNITED States tomorrow faces a decision between two Ivy League-educated men who will have to deal with a massive deficit, troubled overseas military operations and renewed concerns over America’s place in the world.
The two candidates offer radically different tax policy – President Barack Obama supports letting income tax cuts on the highest earners expire, while former Governor Mitt Romney wants to pile on an extra 20 percentage point cut.
The candidates’ positions on abortion are similarly divided – Obama is in favour of the current law while Romney supports limiting abortion to cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger.
But the candidates have staked out remarkably similar foreign policies, in contrast to the 2008 election: both candidates support drone strikes and waterboarding, and consider attacking Iran an option that’s “on the table.”
