It’s 50-up for Frankie as Godolphin taste Cup glory
FRANKIE DETTORI struck gold for Godolphin after landing the Goodwood Cup with red-hot favourite Schiparelli.
Dettori kicked on over a half-mile out to hold off the late challenge of Ryan Moore’s charge Mourilyan and claim his 50th win at this famous flat meet.
A 51st victory then followed in the penultimate race aboard Water Biscuit – a result which handed Dettori a share of the lead with Moore in the top jockey contest with three wins each.
Well-backed Schiaparelli was a regular Group One winner when trained in Germany but this was the six-year-old’s first success for his new connections. Dettori, for one, was suitably impressed.“This fellow is a good horse,” he said. “It’s his first try over this trip and he stayed well and he won like a nice stayer.
“I had a little look and I saw Ryan Moore behind me, but my horse wasn’t slowing down so I thought he’d be hard to get past.”
Elsewhere, Henry Cecil’s Sevenna was the surprise winner in the Group Three Moet Hennessy Fillies’ Stakes with the 12-1 shot holding off Cassique Lady and Victoria Montoya by a length and a half.
Sir Michael Stoute also earned success with Kingsgate Native, who returned to his brilliant best after failing at stud to land the Group 3 Audi Stakes. Under Moore, the 7-1 shot beat Total Gallery and fast-finishing Inxile into second and third, while Borderlescott was fourth.
