Emails suggest Murdoch knew about hacking
JAMES Murdoch has continued to deny prior knowledge of the full scale of phone-hacking at the News of the World, despite the emergence yesterday of a chain of emails that refer to the potential scope of the voicemail intrusions.
Colin Myler forwarded Murdoch (pictured) an email trail on 7 June 2008 discussing the case being brought by PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor against the news group, saying “unfortunately, it is as bad as we feared.”
However, Murdoch claims that, given the timing of his response – three minutes after receiving Myler’s email – and the fact that he usually reads emails on a Blackberry at weekends, he had not seen the full chain of emails.
He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm my past testimony that I was not aware of evidence that pointed to widespread wrongdoing or indicated that further investigation was necessary.”
