MITT Romney was well on his way to winning the latest vote for the Republican presidential nomination, early polls showed this morning.

Romney supporters waved flags and chanted his name at a victory party that kicked off less than an hour after the Florida polls shut.

He thanked his supporters when he appeared at the rally with his wife and children.

Seen as the moderate candidate and the bookies’ favourite, Romney was far ahead of his nearest rival, Newt Gingrich, in exit polls conducted by US media this morning.

Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, the other candidates left in the running, looked to trail by a wide margin.

Florida is the largest nominating contest so far in the state-by-state battle to pick a Republican to face Democratic US President Barack Obama in the 6 November election.
