US consumer confidence soars in April

US consumer confidence has soared in April, overshadowing a fall in the Chicago purchasing managers' index (PMI), as the figure rocketed from 61.9 to 68.1, smashing expectations of a rise to 60.8 (previous figure was revised upwards from 59.7).

The Chicago PMI number came in lower than anticipated with a fall from 52.4 to 49. Consensus predictions indicated a small rise to 52.5.
