Total public sector employment falls, but central government is growing

Following news that UK employment grew by 24,000 to 29.76m in February through April 2013, ONS data shows public sector employment in the first quarter fell 22,000 to 5.697m quarter-on-quarter.

Employment fell by 26,000 in local government and by 9,000 in public corporations, but rose by 13,000 in central government, reflecting relative allocation of resources.

Total UK public sector employment is estimated to be 112,000 lower than the first quarter of 2012, once the effects of the reclassification of English further education colleges and sixth form college corporations have been removed. By comparison, total private sector employment is estimated to by 544,000 higher over the same period.
