Miner Rio Tinto has released an operations review for the first quarter (release). The company noted that an accident at Bingham canyon last week will hit copper production. No injuries were sustained in a slide along the pit's wall in excess of 150 tonnes of material. A recovery plan is being put in place.

Elsewhere new projects in Pilbara and Mongolia are going ahead. The added capacity at Pilbara allowed Rio Tinto to achieve record first quarter iron ore production.

Chief executive Sam Walsh commented on the review:

We are making good progress in achieving our cost reduction targets and other priorities for 2013.
