Italian unemployment highest since 1977 (12.2 per cent)

Italian unemployment has reached its highest point since 1977, coming in at 12.2 per cent for May, up from 12.0 per cent the month before.

Istat estimates that 22.6m people were employed in May 2013, with an employment rate of 56 per cent and an inactivity rate of 36.1 per cent.

Males were more likely to be employed than females, with the male and female employment rates at a respective 65.0 and 47.0 per cent, and unemployment at 11.5 and 13.2 per cent.
