German retail sales return to growth in May, with stronger than expected rise

German retail sales have started to grow again, at 0.8 per cent in May. Economists anticipated monthly growth of 0.2 per cent from -0.1 per cent (revised from -0.4 per cent) prior. A strong beat for May and nice revisions for last month.

That takes annual retail sales growth to 0.4 per cent in the year to May, just below expectations of a 0.6 per cent rise.
