German finance minister Wolfgang Schauble, speaking as a hearing of Germany's Constitutional Court gets underway, has said that he doesn't think that the European Central Bank's (ECB) measures have overstepped the central bank's mandate.
Schauble said that the ECB's independence is to be respected and reminded the court that it was a German wish that the ECB be independent. He added that the constitutional court recognised this 20 years ago.
If the court rules against ECB measures then it would be able to limit the actions of both the German government and Bundesbank. The dispute could end up in the European Court of Justice.
