French unemployment hits record high of 3.264m

French unemployment has hit a record 3.264m in April , the highest since records began in 1996. Jobless claims rose by 39,800.

A leak published by French newspaper Les Echos over an hour before the official release stated that jobless claims rose by by 40,000 in April from March (Les Echos).

The French prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has said that the April data will not be good, but that there is no reason to believe that unemployment will rise indefinitely.
