French consumers defy expectations with slight spending rise in May

Despite economist predictions, French consumers have upped their spending in May, rising by 0.5 per cent in the month from -0.5 per cent previous (revised from -0.3 per cent). Analysts had expected consumer spending to fall by a further 0.1 per cent.

Factory costs fell in the same month, as producer prices fell by 1.2 per cent, the same as the last month after revisions from a 0.9 per cent fall in the previous period.
