Boeing cleared for battery test takeoff

US transport regulators have granted Boeing approval to test a new battery for its Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Two limited flights will be permitted to test the new design. Two battery fires saw the 50 aircraft in service grounded by regulators.

"We won't allow the plane to return to service unless we're satisfied that the new design ensures the safety of the aircraft and its passengers," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.
