Ex-Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to a year in jail over publication of a wiretapped conversation by his family's newspaper.
Berlusconi is 76 years old and would not have to serve the sentence until after the appeals process has finished, and a high court ruling may still overturn the sentence. His old age and significant wealth may help him to avoid ever spending a day in jail. He is currently also facing trials for paying for sex with a juvenile prostitute (expected to finish by 18 March) and over broadcast rights (expected to finish by 23 March).
The ex-prime minister's brother Paolo, publisher of the family-owned Il Giornale daily, has been sentenced to two years and three months over the same wiretapping incident.
