Operating system Android has increased its lead on its competitors offerings in the first quarter of 2013, as its market share grew from 56.9 per cent to 74.4 per cent accord to new figures from Gartner. Apple's iOS took 18.2 per cent while Blackberry's Research in Motion trailed at just three per cent.

Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner:

Apple is faced with the challenge of being increasingly dependent on the replacement market as its addressable market is capped. The next two quarters will also be challenging, as there are no new products are expected to be coming before the third quarter of 2013.

Gartner said that mobile phone sales to end users totalled nearly 426 million in the first quarter, up 0.7 per cent from the same period last year.
