Big six energy bosses called before MPs

The chief executives of the big six energy firms have been called before the energy select committee on 29 October.

Sir Robert Smith MP said in a statement that "the committee has today decided to call in the energy bosses in the context of the latest wave of price increases".

MPs will grill bosses over the reasons and justifications for recent price rises and discuss the difference of pricing policies between suppliers. The session will also explore how the transparency of energy company profits can be improved.

So far three of the big six (SSE, Centrica and Npower) have announced price rises, while EDF chief executive Vincent de Rivaz yesterday refused to confirm or deny a price hike. De Rivaz said that the French energy company would keep bills "at the lowest possible level".
