Yum suffers from bird flu

AN OUTBREAK of bird flu has caused KFC operator Yum Brands to suffer declining sales in its China division.

Yum Brands yesterday reported an estimated 13 per cent decline in Chinese same-store sales for March, including an estimated 16 per cent reduction in KFC sales and four per cent growth at Pizza Hut.

The firm said “publicity associated with Avian flu in China has had a significant, negative impact on KFC sales”, adding that properly cooked chicken is safe to eat.

The World Health Organization (WHO) first reported the new strain of the virus on 1 April, and, to date, a total of 28 cases have been laboratory confirmed.
