HERMAN van Rompuy plans to retire from politics entirely when his current mandate as president of the European Council runs out next year, he said yesterday.
The 65-year old Belgian has sat astride European politics since his role was created in 2009 by the Lisbon Treaty.
But he will exit European politics for good next November when his second term ends, he told Belgian state broadcaster VRT yesterday. “2014 is the end of my political career path,” he said, though he went on to suggest his political legacy would continue. “I still have family members who are running for office – those who want to vote for a van Rompuy can do so.”
Before heading up the European Council van Rompuy was Belgian Prime Minister and budget minister.
