UK unemployment edges up in first quarter

THE UK unemployment rate rose to 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2013, up 0.1 per cent from the previous quarter, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics today.

There were 2.52 million unemployed people during the quarter, up 15,000 from October to December last year, the data said.

However, this was a 0.4 per cent decrease year-on-year, with 92,000 more people unemployed in the first quarter of 2012.

Meanwhile jobless claims contracted by 7,300 in April, down to 4.5 per cent from 4.6 per cent, exceeding forecasts of a 3,000 decline.
