Tug-of-war for Eriksson after County boss sacked

NOTTS COUNTY yesterday sacked manager Ian McParland – paving the way for Sven-Goran Eriksson to make a swift return to management.

The Swede looks set to move down from his director of football role with the mega-rich Meadow Lane club.

But the 61-year-old has a dilemma on his hands after facing calls from his homeland to take over the Sweden national team following their disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign.

McParland’s position has been in doubt ever since Swiss-based Middle East consortium Munto Finance completed their takeover of the League Two club last month, leading to Eriksson’s shock appointment.

The Sweden job is expected to be vacated by Lars Lagerback later this week with his side likely to be pipped by Portugal for a World Cup play-off spot.

Lagerback said he would quit his role at the end of the campaign, whenever that may be, and Eriksson is the people’s choice to take over the reins.

Eriksson refused to answer any questions about the Sweden job after Sunday’s disappointing 2-2 draw to Torquay but his trusted right-hand man, Tord Grip, said: “I don’t know if he has a clause in his contract, but I’m sure he would be interested.”

The Swedish FA say they have not yet drawn up a shortlist of successors.
