Torres keeps Reds on the trophy trail

FERNANDO TORRES scored twice to help keep Liverpool’s season alive.

The Spaniard netted a fine second half brace to finally see off the French side and earn Rafael Beintez’s men a place in today’s last eight draw.

Liverpool needed just eight minutes to cancel out Lille’s 1-0 first-leg lead – captain Steven Gerrard firing home from the penalty spot after Adil Rami had upended Lucas.

Pepe Reina made a superb save to deny Eden Hazard before Torres chipped in the second goal after the break.

The Spaniard then wrapped things up in the final minute after Gerrard’s shot was saved.

Benitez said: “It was a difficult game because they are a good team but the atmosphere was fantastic and everybody is happy now.

“You could see they were working very hard today so it was really good.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, yesterday suspended Spanish winger Albert Reira for comments made towards Benitez where he described the club as a “sinking ship”.
