Timely boost for Mickelson

FOUR-TIME Major winner Phil Mickelson believes yesterday’s victory at the Scottish Open tees him up perfectly for mounting a challenge at this week’s Open at Muirfield.

Mickelson had to negotiate a one hole play-off against South Africa’s Branden Grace yesterday, after his round of 69 finished with a bogey.

But the 2011 Open runner-up was pleased to triumph for the first time on British soil and hopes to secure back-to-back success later this week.

He said: “I don’t think there is a better way to get ready for a major and coming out on top gives me more confidence.”
