OUTGOING WH Smith chief executive Kate Swann was showered with praise yesterday as she delivered the group’s best half-year profits for a decade.
According to Deutsche Bank analyst Warwick Okines, Swann had “made WH Smith great again.”
The obvious reference to David Cameron’s tribute to Margaret Thatcher who the PM on Monday described as making Britain great again, caught Swann blushing.
“The guys thought it was a good analogy, I wasn’t so sure myself,” she joked.
However, like the Iron Lady, who ascended from grocer’s daughter to the top job, Swann’s ambition is known to be deep. With her June departure date looming fast, headhunters are closing in. And she’s made it as clear as possible she wants another top job – “I see the attraction for ladies who lunch but I cannot see it right now [for me],” she hinted. Could Swann be aiming for PM?
