Thameslink at risk of delays

THE SPENDING watchdog has flagged up possible delays to the Thameslink rail upgrade project.

The National Audit Office said the scheme has stayed within its budget target, but that setbacks were possible in the long-running talks with Siemens over a £1.6bn train contract.

The completion date for the £3.55bn upgrade between Bedford and Brighton has already been pushed back from 2015 to 2018.

Shadow transport secretary Maria Miller said any delay could cascade into expensive problems across the entire rail network.
