FEARS that England spinner Graeme Swann could miss next week’s first Ashes Test were assuaged last night after an X-ray on a blow to his bowling arm.

Swann was hit by a Tymal Mills delivery as England made 413-9 declared and then restricted Essex to 231-9 in the four-day Ashes warm-up.

A stand of 187 between Swann (94) and Tim Bresnan (105 not out) dragged England from 212-7 to a more respectable total, before opener and off-spinner Joe Root took a career-best 4-57. Root suffered a similar injury scare when struck on the knee by Mills on Sunday.
