Strachan: I know I'll get time at Boro

GORDON STRACHAN has vowed to lead Middlesbrough back into the Premier League after taking charge at the Riverside Stadium yesterday.

Strachan, who has been out of work since stepping down as Celtic manager last summer, has signed a four-year contract with Boro.

“I feel I can make the people I work with better and if I can do that we have a chance,” said the Scot. “It is an exciting division to come into.”

Strachan walked away from Celtic after three league titles in four years, but said the challenge of getting Boro promoted from the Championship had tempted him back to the game.

He added: “I don’t need to be here, I don’t have to be here. I’m here because I want to be here.”

Boro chairman Steve Gibson was praised for sticking by manager Gareth Southgate despite the club’s relegation last season. Gibson ultimately sacked Southgate last week, saying he did not believe he would get the club back out of the Championship, but not before having more than three years at the helm.

Former Southampton and Coventry boss Strachan added: “I also know you get time here. The stability of the club means you have the chance to develop things the way you would like to see them develop.”
