Sportech and HMRC rematch

SPORTECH has been dragged back into a tax battle after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) appealed a ruling that forced it to pay the firm up to £80m back in VAT.

The Football Pools owner won a lengthy dispute against HMRC in March over whether its Spot The Ball competition was a game of chance, which VAT is not charged on, rather than a game of skill. Sportech said yesterday that HMRC had appealed.
