Social gaming firm King hits 100m players

BRITISH social gaming company King.com has revealed that it now has more than 100m monthly users, indicating a rapid rate of growth in recent months.

The firm, which makes puzzle games for Facebook and smartphones including the social network’s most popular title, Candy Crush Saga, has said that it now has 108m people playing its games per month. This is up from close to 70m at the start of the year.

King.com also announced that after 10 years it would change its name to simply King, as part of a sleek rebranding that could pave the way for an initial public offering towards the end of the year.

King has seen rapid growth in recent months as its popular Facebook games have made their way onto mobiles. This move means it has taken advantage of a shift in consumer habits from playing games on computers to on tablets and smartphones. Unlike US rival Zynga, it has not suffered from the popularity of mobile gaming.

King said yesterday that almost half of its 108m players are now using its games on mobiles, and that it is now processing 12bn game plays a month, up from 9bn in February.
