YOUVIEW, the internet-connected set-top box service backed by the BBC and BT, has appointed Carphone Warehouse founder and chairman Sir Charles Dunstone as interim chairman, after Lord Alan Sugar quit amid a boardroom bust-up.
Sir Charles, who also chairs TalkTalk, the broadband and TV provider which owns a stake in YouView, will act as chairman until a successor can be found. He told City A.M. yesterday that he expects to stay in the role “for a few months”.
The 48 year-old will have to negotiate a room filled with high-profile personalities at YouView’s next board meeting. Investors in the company include the BBC, BT, Channel 4, ITV, Channel 5 and TalkTalk, and the board contains such fiery personalities as Richard Desmond, Channel 5’s owner.
Desmond had taunted Lord Sugar with shouts of “You’re Fired”, mimicking The Apprentice host’s catchphrase, at a recent board meeting, although it is unclear whether Lord Sugar had announced his departure then.
TalkTalk offers YouView boxes as part of its TV package.
