RETAIL stalwart Simon Burke has thrown his weight behind mobile shopping technology, after joining small mobile voucher specialist Eagle Eye Solutions as chairman.

Burke, best known for turning around Virgin Megastores and bidding £940m for WH Smith, declared yesterday: “Mobile vouchers are the next big thing in retail and leisure. This technology offers the only easy way to redeem these vouchers securely and in a way which tracks the usage, both of which can be invaluable to businesses.”

Burke will remain chairman of Hobbycraft and Mitchells & Butlers alongside his Eagle Eye duties.

Russell Buckley, who joined as chief executive earlier in the month, told City A.M.: “Simon is very committed to helping us expand and we have got some major new partners in the pipeline.”
