Shell launches first LNG barge

Anglo-Dutch oil giant Royal Dutch Shell yesterday hailed the launch of the first 100 per cent liquified natural gas (LNG) powered barge in the Netherlands, as part of a longer-term plan to use the European LNG industry to fuel transport such as barges, ferries, tugs and cruise ships. Yesterday’s launch is one of two new LNG powered barges to be chartered by Shell, the second of which is due to start operating on the Rhine in the next two weeks. The barge, called Greenstream, was yesterday welcomed by Shell chief executive Peter Voser. Over the next few years, Shell will develop two LNG corridors, primarily for the marine industry in the Gulf Coast and Great Lakes areas of North America.
