THE SHAREHOLDER Executive, the organisation that oversees the government’s billons of pounds of shareholdings in firms including Royal Mail, will confirm Mark Russell as its chief executive today.

Russell, a former corporate finance partner at accountancy firm KPMG, has been acting as chief executive since his predecessor, Stephen Lovegrove, quit in February to become permanent secretary at the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, which oversees the department, will confirm today that Russell has been promoted to the role on a permanent basis, as first reported by Sky News.

Russell joined the Executive as head of its corporate finance practice in November 2004 and was made deputy chief executive in April 2008.
