IN his latest film Ryan Gosling stars as a stunt driver who supplements his income with night-time robberies – sound familiar? No, this isn’t the sequel to Drive. This is The Place Beyond The Pines, next month’s hotly anticipated crime drama starring Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendez. On paper, it looks exactly like Nicolas Winding Refn's hyper-stylized 2011 hit, but director Derek Cianfrance – who spent the first half of his career making documentaries – has promised something much more realistic. In Drive, Gosling was an ice-cool killer. Here he’s human; despite the muscles and the motorbike, he suffers from crippling nerves. Cianfrance and Gosling first worked together in the award-winning Blue Valentine. If The Place Beyond The Pines is half as good as that, we're in for a treat.
The Place Behind The Pines is in Cinemas 12 April.
