Robson and Watson spearhead British charge in women’s draw

BRITISH women’s No1 Laura Robson will have to overcome Russian 10th seed Maria Kirilenko if she is to reach the second round of Wimbledon today.

Robson, who is ranked 38th in the world but has only cleared the first round once, in 2011, faces last year’s quarter-finalist Kirilenko on Court One.

Compatriot Heather Watson is first up on Court Two this morning, when she meets 18-year-old American Madison Keys, who is ranked four places above the Channel Islander at 52.

British wildcard Tara Moore, ranked 194, is scheduled to make her Wimbledon singles debut against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

Men’s and women’s top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams begin their challenges.
