Rise in black market fuel sales

Despite the freeze in fuel duty, the UK’s tax collectors recorded 338 sites selling petrol illegally in 2012-13, compared to 262 detections in 2009-10, a 29 per cent increase. HMRC said the fuel has often either been mixed or smuggled into the country. The substandard fuel can damage vehicle engines. The tax collector made 6,506 visits to sites in the UK over 2012-13.
