STATE backed bank RBS apologised to customers yesterday after its banking systems crashed for the second time in nine months, leaving people without access to money.

A hardware problem between 9pm and 11pm on Wednesday meant card payments could not be processed and customers could not withdraw cash. It left many people stranded in shops, restaurants and bars unable to pay for purchases.

“We are disappointed that our customers have faced disruption to banking services for a period yesterday evening, and apologise for that,” RBS said in a statement.
