I don’t understand why so many people think the government knows how to invest our money. If they did, they would be in business not politics; or would at least have more experience of running a successful business. But every year policy-makers look busy by devising new ways to increase the size of the budgets they manage.
Although dropping the 50p rate makes sense, the country is run by a government that acts on populist instincts rather than logical, educated sense. It would prefer to sell the family silver (or gold) to appease its voters than strip back our troubles to their root causes. The least-worst viable option for George Osborne is to keep the 50p rate while doubling the threshold to £300,000.
