Rank blames cold snap for sales dip

COLD weather at the start of the year led to disappointing sales at casino operator Rank Group.

The company, which owns the Grosvenor Casino chain as well as Mecca Bingo, said revenues in the 18 weeks to 5 May were three per cent down on the same period last year. The biggest faller was sports bookie Blue Square, which has recently been sold to Betfair, although Rank’s core businesses suffered as well.

Rank also announced that it had completed the £179m acquisition of 19 casinos owned by Gala Coral.
