Public rail is the future: poll by RMT

RAIL union RMT will today release a poll showing 70 per cent of the public support the renationalisation of the railways, weeks before National Express&rsquo; East Coast Main Line franchise is set to be brought back under public control.<br /><br />Only 23 per cent of the 1017 people questioned support continued privatisation in the industry, the poll will say.<br /><br />The data comes out as the TUC congress, which is due to open today, gets set to discuss the future of the failed East Coast franchise.<br /><br />It will be the second time since the privatisation of the rail industry in the mid-1990s that part of a network will be put back in the government&rsquo;s hands.<br /><br />RMT will be calling for support for the full renationalisation of the railways and London Underground, the union said.<br /><br />Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers has said the Conservatives want to &ldquo;stop the constant government meddling which is holding back railways.&rdquo;
