PREMIER FOODS said a step up in marketing around its eight so-called power brands that include Bisto gravy and Sharwood sauces helped boost sales in the first quarter of the year.

The group, which also owns Hovis bread and Ambrosia puddings, posted a 2.2 per cent rise in brand sales to £275m in the three months to 31 March. Power brands grew 3.5 per cent.

Premier blamed contract losses at its bread division for a five per cent fall in non-branded sales.
