Portsmouth deny player exodus despite special league ruling
PORTSMOUTH were yesterday granted special permission to sell players outside of the transfer window to ease their financial crisis.
Cash-strapped Pompey, who were deducted nine points for going into administration last month, can now offload players with immediate effect – but they will not be able to play for any other Premier League club until next season.
Players sold to a Football League club or abroad, however, will be able to carry on playing.
Many feared the decision would open the floodgates for a player exodus at Fratton Park, but administrator Andrew Andronikou denies that will be the case, especially with Pompey preparing for an FA Cup semi-final.
“This has effectively given us an option if we need it but at this moment I want to emphasise we’re not necessarily going to sell players,” he said.
